Hedonic adaptation makes individuals versatile

People are capable of adjusting their baseline reference point of pain and pleasure based on experience. This means that through long enough exposure to a pleasant or painful stimuli, one is going to eventually perceive it as perfectly ordinary. Hedonic adaptation also empowers individuals going through difficult situations. The biological substrate of hedonic adaptation appears to me linked to the highly adaptive nature of reward systems, which aggressively habituate past rewards.
